The British initially came to India as traders in the early seventeenth century. With the weakening of the Mughal empire and the rise of regional kingdoms, the British gradually began acquiring political power. They exploited the disunity among the native rulers to expand and consolidate British rule over India. The British officials gradually introduced policies like the Subsidiary Alliance, Doctrine of Lapse, etc. to annex new native kingdoms with minimum efforts. They eventually introduced reforms and made changes for the smooth functioning of the administration in India. In other words, the British officials driven by imperialist intentions and nationalist spirit reduced the Indians into subjects in their own land with the help of their exploitative and oppressive policies.
