These two elements are readily mixed with oxygen and therefore cause air pollution. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas. It is produced by incomplete combustion of fuel in industries, motor vehicles. When inhaled, it combines with haemoglobin and reduces its oxygen-carrying capacity.

Effect on the environment: Methane oxidises into carbon dioxide (CO2), increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and adding to the greenhouse effect and global warming. The chlorofluorocarbon causes the ozone layer depletion. Effect on health: Contamination of petroleum causes an adverse effect on the genetic health, immune system, and endocrine system. Some of these hydrocarbons are toxic, with the potential to cau se cancer.
