A figure is said to have line symmetry, if by folding a figure along the line, the left and right part of it coincide exactly. The line that divides the figure into two identical halves is known as the line of symmetry. The line of symmetry can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal. A triangle can have 3 or 1 or no lines of symmetry. We know that in equilateral triangle all sides and all angles are equal. Hence, an equilateral triangle have 3 lines of symmetry. An isosceles triangle is a triangle in which any two sides are equal. So, an isosceles triangle will have one line of symmetry passing through the vertex formed by the meeting of two of its equal sides. The dashed line represents the line of symmetry. Hence, an isosceles triangle has one line of symmetry. In scalene triangle, all three sides have different lengths. Also the angles of a scalene triangle have different measures. So, there is no line that can pass through the scalene triangle such that the triangle can be divided into two equal halves. Hence, a scalene triangle has no lines of symmetry. In rhombus all the sides are equal but their opposite angles are equal. The diagonals of a rhombus bisect each other at right angles. So, the rhombus has two lines of symmetry. The diagonals are its symmetry lines. We know that the regular polygon is a polygon with all the sides and all angles are of equal measure. Line of symmetry for the regular polygon depends on the number of sides. The given figure represents a regular hexagon which has 6 sides. The line of symmetry for regular hexagon is 6 In circle, any line that pass through the centre of the circle divides the circle into two identical halves.
