They are called sponges. They are acoelomate, asymmetrical, diploblastic, sedentary (or sessile) animals showing cell aggregate body plan.

They show spongocoel and spongin fibres on their body.

Classification:

There are three classes, like:

Calcaria (Calcispongiae) Hexactinellida (Hyalospongiae) Desmospongiae

They have calcareous spicules.

They are solitary or colonial.

They may show asconoid, syconoid or leuconoid structure.

They are called glass-sponges.

Skeleton has siliceous spicules.

Choanocytes line the finger shaped chambers

The skeleton may be of spongin fibers or of spongin fibers with siliceous spicules or there may be no skeleton.

The canal system is of leucon type.

There are 2 orders:

Homocoela includes Leucosolenia.

Heterocoela includes Sycon.

There are 2 orders:

Hexasterophora including Euplectella.

Amphidiscophora including Hyalonema.
