The system of Subsidiary Alliance was introduced by Lord Wellesley, the Governor-General of India ( $1798 - 1805$ ). This system laid the following conditions for the signatory states:

a. They could not keep their army. Now they had to keep British forces for their protection and pay for their maintenance, in the form of cash, or have to cede part of their territory.

b. They had to take the approval of the company before making any treaty or war with any other state.

c. They had to keep a British officer called Resident in their court who would advise them in their internal matters.

By these provisions of the Subsidiary Alliance treaty, they made native rulers dependent on the company in defence as well as external matters.
