Embryo development, known as embryogeny, follows a similar pattern in both monocotyledons and dicotyledons. The sequence of events is as follows:

The zygote undergoes a transverse division, resulting in the formation of two cells.

One of these cells is the suspensor cell located towards the micropyle, while the other is the embryo cell located farther away.

The embryo cell undergoes mitotic divisions, giving rise to a structure called the proembryo.

The proembryo undergoes several divisions in different planes, progressing through various stages such as globular and heart-shaped embryos, until it develops into a mature embryo.

The remaining chain of cells formed by the division of the suspensor cell is referred to as the suspensor, with a basal cell below.

As the suspensor elongates, it pushes the embryonic cells deeper into the endosperm to facilitate nutrient absorption.

A few cells of embryo nearest to suspensor develop into hypocotyl and radicle. Other cells give rise to epicotyl, plumule and cotyledons.

A mature embryo may have one or two cotyledons (one in monocotyledons and two in dicotyledons). The plumule is present at the apical end and the radicle is towards the micropylar end.

As the embryo develops, the integument cells become lignified and form a covering called testa or the seed coat.

Structure of a dicot embryo:

A typical dicot embryo consists of an embryonal axis and two cotyledons. -Portion of embryonal axis above the level of cotyledons is called epicotyl. It terminates into the plumule.

Portion of embryonal axis below the level of cotyledons is called hypocotyl. It terminates into the radicle or root tip. The root tip is covered by a root cap.
