The Delhi Sultanate

The first successful attempt to rule over India during the Medieval period was made by the dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate. The chronology of dynasties under the Delhi Sultanate is- Slave dynasty, Khilji Dynasty, Tughlaq dynasty, Sayyid dynasty, and Lodi dynasty.

1. Slave Dynasty(1206-1290)

(i) Qutubuddin Aibak

(a) He is said to be the founder of the dynasty and is known to have laid the foundation of Qutub Minar, Adhai Din Ka Jhopra, Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque.

(ii) ILtutmish

(a) He is said to be the real founder of the Slave Dynasty and consolidated the Slave Dynasty.

(b) Completed the construction of Qutub Minar, started Tujuk--Chalisha introduced Iqta System and also started currencies named Jital and Tanka.

(iii) Razia Sultan

(a) The only lady sultan of the dynasty and was assassinated by her Brother.

(iv) Balban

2. Khilji Dynasty(1290-1320)

(a) He was the most prominent ruler of the Khilji dynasty.

3. Tughlaq Dynasty(1320-1413)

(i) Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq

(a) He was the founder of the Tughluq dynasty.

(b) He is known to have established the city of Tughlaqabad.

(ii) Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq

(a) He is known to have transferred the capital from Delhi to Daultabad.

(b) Started a department of agriculture called Diwan-i-Amir Kohi, and Ibn Batuta visited his court.

(c) Vijayanagara and Bahmani kingdoms were founded during his regime.

(iii) Firoz Tughluq

(a) He is known to have established a number of cities like Firozabad, Hissar, Jaunpur, etc.

4. Sayyid Dynasty(1414-1451)

(i) This dynasty was founded by Khizr Khan, and Mohammad Sah was the most prominent ruler.

5. Lodi Dynasty(1451-1526)

(i) Bahlol Lodi

(a) He was the founder of this dynasty and circulated a coin called the Bahloli coin.

(ii) Sikander Lodi

(a) He is known to have founded the city of Agra and also used to write poems under the pen name Gulrukhi.

(iii) Ibrahim Lodi

(a) He was the last ruler of the Delhi sultanate who was defeated by Babur in the Battle of Panipat 1526.
