2. Preparation of Haloalkanes:

(i) From Alcohols:

R-OH+HClZnCl2R-Cl+H2O

R-OH+NaBr+H2SO4R-Br+NaHSO4+H2O

3R-OH+PX33R-X+H3PO3(X=Cl,Br)

R-OH+PClsR-Cl+POCl3+HCl

R-OHx2=Br2,I2red P/X2R-X

R-OH+SOCl2R-Cl+SO2+HCl

(ii) From alkanes by free radical halogenation :

CH3CH2CH2CH3or heatCl2/UV lightCH3CH2CH2CH2Cl+CH3CH2CHClCH3

(iii) From Alkenes by addition of hydrogen halides -

CH3CH=CH2+H-ICH3CH2CH2IMinor+CH3CHICH3Major

(iv) From Alkenes by addition of Halogens

C2H4+Br2CCl4BrCH2-CH2Br

(v) By Halogen exchange method:

(a) Finkelstein reaction:
CH3CH2Br+Nalheat AcetoneCH3CH2I+NaBr

(b) Swart's reaction:
