State the volume changes observed when a given mass of water is heated from 0 ∘ C t o 10 ∘ C . Sketch temperature-volume graph to show the behaviour.

In the case of fluids, with the rise of temperature, the volume increases. Therefore, the density decreases. But, water shows an anomalous behaviour, as it contracts on heating between the temperature 0 ° C to 4 ° C . When water is heated above 0 ° C , the volume of given amount of water decreases until its temperature reaches to 4 ° C . The volume decreases and hence density increases. So, it is clear that water has minimum volume and hence maximum density at 4 ° C . The volume-temperature graph given below shows this.
