Biotic components are the living organisms of the ecosystem. The biotic components are divided into three categories:

Producers: These include green plants, photosynthetic bacteria, cyanobacteria, and green algae. These are also called producers as they are capable of synthesizing their own food by photosynthesis. The producers trap solar energy and synthesize food as glucose. Glucose is used by plants to synthesize organic compounds.

Consumers: These include those organisms which are not capable of synthesizing their own food. They depend for their food on plants and on other animals. Consumers are also divided into two categories: Primary consumers, secondary consumers, tertiary consumers, and quaternary consumers.

Decomposers: Decomposers decompose the dead animals and plants and release most of the inorganic compounds into the environment. Bacteria and fungi are the major examples of decomposers.
