The concept of mixing atomic orbitals into new hybrid orbitals suitable for the pairing of electrons to form chemical bonds in valence bond theory is called hybridisation.

$sp$ hybridisation – when one $s$ and one $sp$ orbitals intermix, it results in $sp$ hybridisation. These hybrid orbitals are collinear with an angle of $180 °$ . Eg. ${BeF}_{2}, {BeH}_{2}$ etc.

${sp}^{2}$ hybridisation – when one $s$ and two $p$ orbital of the same shell of an atom mix to for, three new equivalent orbitals, the types of hybridisation is called ${sp}^{2}$ hybridisation or trigonal hybridisation. Ex. ${BF}_{3}, {BH}_{3}$ .

${sp}^{3}$ hybridisation – when one $s$ and three $p$ -orbital belonging to the same shell of an atom mix together to form four new equivalent orbitals, called ${sp}^{3}$ hybridisation or tetrahedral hybridisation. For Example: ${CH}_{4}, C_{2} H_{6}$
