Define bud and describe the different types of buds with examples.

Bud is an undeveloped, compact and young shoot in which the young rudimentary leaves with very short internodes are closely crowded. The plumule in the embryo of the seed is the first bud from which the shoot system develops. The development of the leaves in a bud is in acropetal manner.

Based on their position, there are two types of bud.
i) Apical bud: Normally it occupies its position at the apex of the stem or branch which is said to be terminal or apical. The elongation of stem depends on the growth of the terminal bud.
ii) Axillary bud: The position of bud is in the axil of a leaf it is known as axillary bud. When the axillary bud gross, it gives rise to branches. If any extra buds developed by the side of the axillary bud these are known as accessory bud.

The buds may be vegetative for floral. The former, on development to form vegetative shoots and the floral bud gives rise to the flowers.

Sometimes adventitious buds are developed at various other parts of the plants. The function of all these buds are to gradually develop into new branches and in some plants in two independent plants. These are classified into the following:

i) Radical bud: It is adventitious bud that is developed from the root. Example: Sweet potato

ii) Foliar bud: It is developed from the leaf. Example: Bryophyllum

iii) Cauline bud: It is developed from the different positions of the stem and the branches.

Bud, which begin the growth and development as soon as they emerge from the stem are called active bud. In certain cases, they remain inactive for a longer period and are called dormant buds.
