A cross between the two pure breeding parents or the homozygous parents in which the pattern of inheritance of two pairs of contrasting characters is observed simultaneously is called a dihybrid cross. According to Mendel's statement, between the alleles of both these loci, there is a relationship of completely dominant and recessive traits.

In a dihybrid cross, Mendel considered two traits to conduct a dihybrid cross. A cross between two pure parents is conducted, differing in two pairs of contrasting characters. He studied round and wrinkled seeds along with yellow and green colours. After crossing a homozygous round yellow seeded plant and a wrinkled green seeded plant, the F₁ progenies he got were heterozygous round and yellow seeded plants. After these heterozygous progenies are allowed for self-fertilisation, the progeny produced will be as follows.

Four types of offspring are formed: Round yellow, round green, wrinkled yellow and wrinkled green. These appear in a ratio called phenotypic ratio, i.e., 9:3:3:1.
