Geometrical isomer: This type of isomerism arises in heteroleptic complexes due to different possible geometric arrangements of the ligands. Here, in the compound Cr C 2 O 4 3 3 - , C 2 O 4 2 - is an asymmetrical bidentate ligand. Therefore, geometrical isomers are not possible for this coordination entity.

What are the ambidentate ligands? Give one suitable example of ambidentate ligand.

Ligands that have two different donor atoms and either of the two ligetes in the complex is called ambidentate ligand. Examples of such ligands are the NO 2 - and SCN - ions. NO 2 - ion can coordinate either through nitrogen or through oxygen to a central metal atom/ion. Similarly, SCN - ion can coordinate through the sulphur or nitrogen atom.

A solution of Ni H 2 O 6 2 + is green but a solution of Ni CN 4 2 - is colourless. Explain.

It is important to note that in the absence of ligand, crystal field splitting does not occur and hence the substance is colourless. In, Ni H 2 O 6 2 + Ni + 2 ion has 3 d 8 configuration. In this configuration, there are two unpaired electrons that cannot pair up because water is a weak ligand. Thus, the d-d transition absorbs the incoming light and emits a green light. Thereby, giving a green colour to the solution. Whereas Ni CN 4 2 - Ni + 2 ion has 3 d 8 configuration. But CN - is present here, which is a strong ligand and in its presence, the unpaired electrons pair up. Thus, there is no d-d transition so no colour.

Write the IUPAC names of [ Co ( NH 3 ) 4 Cl ( NO 2 ) ] Cl .

According to IUPAC rules of naming complexes, we first name cation followed by anion. While naming of complexes, ligands are written alphabetically (without gaps) followed by naming of central metal atom with oxidation state in bracket. We know that charge on NH 3 is 0 , on Cl is - 1 and nitrite NO 2 - is - 1 . The total charge on cationic complex is + 1 as it is externally balanced by - 1 charge of Cl - , that gives the oxidation state of cobalt as + 3 . Thus, IUPAC name of the given complex is tetraaminechloridonitritocobalt (III) chloride.

Mention one analytical application of co-ordination compound.

Analytical application of coordination chemistry includes salt analysis, in which a number of basic radicals are detected with the help of the colour changes with different reagents. These colour changes are the result of the coordination compounds or complexes that the basic radicals form with different ligands.
