The process of removal of water in the form of water vapor is called transpiration. The stomata are the main pathway through which this process between the leaf and the atmosphere takes place. Bell-jar experiment demonstrates that water vapor is given off by plants during the process of transpiration.

A bell-jar experiment is depicted below:

Requirement: A healthy potted plant, a bel-jar, a plastic sheet, a string, a big glass slab, Vaseline,

Experiment: A healthy potted plant is taken. In order to prevent water loss by evaporation from the soil of the pot, it is covered completely with a plastic sheet and is tied with the plant with the help of a string. After that, the whole potted plant is laced on a table over a big glass slab. The pot including the plant is next covered with a bel-jar and sealed with Vaseline. The whole apparatus is then kept in bright sunlight for observation.

Observation: After sometimes it is observed that a few drops of water collected on the inside surface of the bel-jar. A pinch of anhydrous copper powder sulfate powder is sprinkled in it to show that the drops collected on the inner surface of the bel-jar are nothing but water.

Inference: This shows that moisture or water drops have come out from the leaves of the potted plant due to transpiration. There is no chance of moisture coming out from the soil surface as it is covered by a plastic sheet. The water vapor liberated by transpiration condensed to water droplets when comes in contact with the cold inner surface of the bel-jar.
