Materials required: A destarched potted plant, a wide-mouthed bottle, a cork with a slit, potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution, a clamp stand, test tube, beaker, Bunsen burner, tripod stand, wire gauze, water, alcohol, and iodine solution.

Procedure: Take some potassium hydroxide solution in a wide-mouthed bottle. Insert half a portion of a leaf of the destarched potted plant into it through the slit cork. The KOH solution absorbs CO₂ from the bottle. Keep the arrangement in sunlight for 5 to 6 hours. Pluck the leaf which was half inside the bottle and perform the starch test using an iodine solution.

Observation: You will notice that the portion of the leaf that was inside the bottle does not show the presence of starch as there was no CO₂ inside the bottle.

Conclusion: CO₂ is essential for the process of photosynthesis.
