Blood is a red colour fluid that flows through narrow tubes called blood vessels. These are of three types: Arteries, veins and capillaries. The blood has two components: Plasma and cellular components such as RBCs, WBCs and platelets.

RBCs [Red blood corpuscles] — These are red coloured enucleated cells which have an oxygen-carrying pigment called hemoglobin. RBCs are biconcave and have a life span of 120 days. These cells help in the transport of oxygen to all the parts of the body and carbon dioxide from all the parts of the body to the heart.

WBCs [White blood corpuscles] — These cells are colourless and nucleated cells. These cells are also called immune cells as they fight against the foreign bodies that may have entered our body. Also, they produce antibodies against harmful microorganisms.

Blood platelets — These are cell fragments and are biconvex discoid. Their main function is to form fiber-like structures or clots near the wound or an injury to prevent excess loss of blood.
