Photosynthesis is a biochemical reaction by which plants make their own food using carbon dioxide, sunlight and chlorophyll. The by-products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen.

Significance of photosynthesis:

It helps in converting solar energy into chemical energy. Plants have chlorophyll which absorbs solar energy and it is converted into potential energy and stored into glucose.

When the plant utilizes that glucose for various functions in the body such as respiration the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy.

Photosynthesis also helps in producing oxygen. It is required by all organisms for survival.

It also helps in maintaining the carbon dioxide-oxygen balance in nature. It utilizes the carbon dioxide released by other organisms and liberates oxygen in the atmosphere.

Plants prepare their own food, so they act as producers in the food chain. Various organisms are dependent on plants for their survival. They form the basis of food chain as producers.

The end products of photosynthesis can be transformed into various products such as enzymes, proteins, vitamins etc.
