Photosynthesis is the process by which plants prepare their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide and chlorophyll. In this process solar energy is converted to chemical energy.

Carbo dioxide- It is taken up by the plants through the mesophyll cells by diffusion

During dark reaction fixation of carbon takes place. The carbon dioxide is taken up by RuBP.

Carbon and oxygen of CO₂ acts as a source of carbohydrates in plants.

Sunlight- It is absorbed by the photosynthetic pigments.

Water- It is an important component of photosynthesis. It is absorbed by the plant from the soil by root hairs.

During light reaction photolysis of water takes place. The water molecule breaks into H⁺ and OH^-.

Due to absorption of light the chlorophyll molecule becomes activated. This activated chlorophyll molecule undergoes photophosphorylation i.e. conversion of ADP to ATP.

The electron released helps in photolysis of water hence releasing H⁺ and OH^- ions. The hydrogen is used to form glucose and oxygen is liberated into the atmosphere.

Pigments- Various photosynthetic pigments are used in photosynthesis. These pigments are used to absorb light of different wavelengths.

Examples of photosynthetic pigments are chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids, xanthophylls etc.
