Describe the digestive system of cockroach.

The digestive system of cockroach is divided into parts:
i. Foregut or stomodaeum:- It is formed by the infolding of the body wall. Cuticle present in the inner side of the foregut. It consists of the mouth, buccal cavity, pharynx, crop and gizzard. Walls of gizzard are composed of the circular muscle layer. Six cuticular teeth occur in the cavity which helps in fine grinding of food. The lower part of gizzard helps in the filtration.

ii. Mesenteron or Midgut:- Gizzard opens into cardia by stomodial valve. Eight small and tubular, finger-like blind processes called hepatic caeca, project freely into the haemocoel, form the front end of the cardia. These secrete digestive juices.

iii. Hindgut or Proctodaeum:- First part of the hindgut is ileum. Its wall is thin and internally folded. Its cuticle bears minute spines, which serve to break the peritrophic membrane. It opens into the colon which is the longest and broader part. The rectum is the last part, oval-shaped and has internally folded wall.
Its wall has six folds which are called rectal papillae. These absorb water. At the end of the tenth abdominal segment, the anus is present.

Salivary glands:- One pair of salivary glands is attached to the oesophagus. It consists of two parts.
(a) Reservoir part:- Cylindrical, stores saliva.
(b) Glandular part:- Leaf-like, synthesis of saliva occurs in this part.
Common efferent salivary duct arises from both salivary glands. This duct opens in the preoral cavity at the base of the hypopharynx. Saliva contains carbohydrate digesting enzymes. e.g. Amylase, chitinase cellulase.
