The crossing of two different lines of genes with two pairs of contrasting traits is known as a dihybrid cross.

An example of dihybrid cross is given below:

A cross between one pea plant with round and yellow seeds and the other pea plant having wrinkled and green seeds.
Mendel crossed a pure breeding pea plant having round yellow seeds (RRYY) with a pure breeding pea plant having wrinkled green seeds (rryy). He obtained only heterozygous round yellow seeds bearing pea plants (RrYy) in the first generation. He then crossed round yellow seeds (RrYy) obtained in the first generation with another round yellow seed (RrYy) and obtained four different combinations in the second generation.
