The nitrogen cycle is a biogeochemical cycle. The nitrogen present in the atmosphere is converted into different forms like nitrates. It is absorbed by plants and animals. The biotic and abiotic components in the nitrogen cycle are dependent upon each other because the main component of the air is nitrogen.

There are four steps in the nitrogen cycle. They are as follows:

Nitrogen Fixation: The plants may take up the nitrogen from the soil with the help of nitrogen-fixing bacteria called Rhizobium which is present in root nodules.

Nitrification: It is the formation of nitrates from ammonia.

Ammonification: When plants or animals die, the nitrogen present in the organic matter of plants or animals is released back to the soil. This process of decomposition produces ammonia.

Denitrification: It is the final stage of the nitrogen cycle in which nitrate is converted into gaseous nitrogen (N) and released back into the atmosphere.
