The internal structure of a dicot stem shows the following distinct regions: Epidermis, cortex (hypodermis, general cortex, endodermis), pericycle, medullary rays, vascular bundles and pith.
(i) Epidermis : It is the outermost layer. It is made up of single layer of parenchyma cells, having no intercellular spaces. It is covered by cuticle to reduce transpiration. They may contain stomata for gaseous exchange. Multicellular hairs are also present.
(ii) Cortex : Cortex is inner to the epidermis. It is divided into three regions: hypodermis, middle cortex and inner cortex.
(iii) Endodermis : It is the outermost layer of cortex consists of a single layer of barrel shaped cells containing starch grains. So it is also called starch sheath.

(iv) Stele : Stele is the central part of the stem inner to endodermis. It includes pericycle, vascular bundles, pith (medulla) and pith rays (medullary rays).
• Vascular bundles are conjoint, collateral, endarch and open types.
• Xylem is endarch. Pith remains in the centre having parenchyma cells with intercellular spaces.
