The dorsiventral leaf or dicot leaf shows the following internal characteristics.

Epidermis: Both upper and lower epidermis are present that are made up of single layer of closely arranged parenchyma cells. Upper epidermis consists of thick cuticle which lacks stomata. The lower epidermis is provided with thin cuticle and many stomata.

Mesophyll: It is lies in between the epidermis that is composed of chloroplast containing parenchymatous cells. It is differentiated into upper palisade tissue with compactly arranged elongated cells and lower spongy tissue with loosely arranged cells with intercellular spaces.

Vascular bundles: These are conjoint, collateral and closed. Each bundle is surrounded by a sheath of parenchymatous bundle sheath. Xylem lies towards the upper epidermis and phloem lies towards the lower epidermis.
