Structure of stomata:

Stomata are the minute pores found in the epidermis of the leaf that helps in exchanging gases.

The stomatal pore is surrounded by a pair of specialised cells known as guard cells which are responsible for regulating the size of the opening.

The inner walls of the guard cells are thicker than the outer walls. The guard cells contain the pigment chlorophyll.

Working of stomata:

The undersurface of the leaves has numerous minute pores called stomata. The main function of the stomata is to let carbon dioxide enter the leaf to perform the process of photosynthesis.

During the daytime, stomata are open to allow carbon dioxide to enter the leaf. At night, the synthesis of food does not occur. Therefore, the stomata close to prevent the loss of water through the process of transpiration.

During the daytime, the guard cells absorb water from the adjacent epidermal cells which causes the guard cells to swell and bulge outwards, resulting in the opening of stomata. At night, the guard cells lose water due to this, they lose their turgidity resulting in the closing of the stomata.
