Parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma are the types of simple permanent tissue. They are considered as supporting tissues depending on their function.

1. Parenchyma:

Structure- The cells of parenchyma are thin walled and are spherical or oval in shape. They contain large vacuole and nucleus in their cytoplasm. Intercellular spaces are present between cells.

Location- It is found in most parts of the plant including the soft parts such as pulp of fruit.

Function- They store food and also helps in the preparation of food in the leaves.

2. Collenchyma:

Structure- The cells of collenchyma are polygonal, oval or elongated and their cell wall is thickened at the corners due to the deposition of cellulose and pectin. The cells contain vacuoles and nucleus. Intercellular spaces are absent between the cells.

Location- It is found below the epidermis of stem and in the leaf stalk.

Function- It provides elasticity, flexibility and also mechanical support.

3. Sclerenchyma:

Structure- Sclerenchyma are made of long, narrow, dead cells. They have thick cell wall due to the deposition of lignin or cellulose. The cells lack nucleus and cytoplasm. The cells are closely-packed hence, intercellular spaces are absent.

Location- It is present in hard parts of the plant such as seed covering, tree bark, etc.

Function- It provides strength and rigidity to the plant and also forms a protective covering around the seeds.
