The brain is a part of central nervous system. It is called as the master organ of the body because it performs the physiological and psychological functions of the body. It is situated in the skull. It is covered by membranes called meninges. The space between the membranes of the brain is filled with a fluid known as cerebrospinal fluid. It protects the brain from shocks and also provides nourishment to the brain.

The human brain is made up of three parts - the cerebrum, cerebellum, and medulla oblongata.

Cerebrum

The cerebrum is the uppermost and largest part of the brain. It is located within the bony cranium. The cerebrum is composed of two hemispheres right and left hemisphere. The cerebrum controls all voluntary movements. It also acts as the centre for mental activity involving memory, thinking, and reasoning. The functions of the cerebrum include initiation of movement, coordination of movement, temperature, touch, vision, hearing, emotions, and learning.

Cerebellum

The cerebellum is located at the base of the cerebrum and is of the shape of an egg. The cerebellum receives information from the sensory systems, the spinal cord, and other parts of the brain and then regulates motor movements. It is also important for making postural adjustments in order to maintain balance and coordinates eye movements, thus heavily impacting our vision.

Medulla oblongata

It is also known as the brain stem. It emerges out from the base of the brain and joins the brain to the spinal cord. It performs many automatic functions such as breathing, heart rate, body temperature, wake and sleep cycles, digestion, sneezing, coughing, vomiting, and swallowing.
