The path of the flow of energy in an ecosystem is called a food chain. The Sun is the primary source of energy in an ecosystem. The green plants make food from inorganic material with the help of solar energy. The food is consumed by the consumers, and the consumers die to become food for the decomposers. This energy flow is unidirectional.

There are mainly three types of food chains, forest, aquatic and grassland.

A food chain in a grassland ecosystem may consist of grasses and other plants, grasshoppers, frogs, snakes and hawks.

The below given food chain is an example of grassland food chain. In this, the rat eats corn, and the owl eats the rat.

The forest food chain includes the trees and plants at the producer level then rat, rabbit, deer and elephant are the primary consumers. The jackal, fox are the secondary consumers and finally the tiger and lion are the tertiary consumers.

The below given food chain is an example of forest food chain. In this food chain, rabbit eats the carrot, the fox eats the rabbit, and the lion eats the fox.
