When we take a coil or a spring and move it forward and backward and by doing so, we observe that in some parts of the coil, the turns will be closer and in some other parts the turns will be far apart. The regions where the turns of the coil are closer are called the region of compressions and where the turns are far apart are called the region of rarefactions.

The diagram given below shows the regions as C and R where C means compression and R means rarefaction.

As the coil oscillates, these regions move along the coil and the waves which propagates with compressions and rarefactions are called longitudinal waves.

The sound wave is also a longitudinal wave and it can only travel when there are particles which can be compressed and rarefied.

See the diagram, here the prongs of a tuning fork are vibrating and the particles of medium are getting compressed and rarefied.

Compressions are the regions of high pressure where the particles are crowded together and rarefactions are the regions of low pressure where the particles are spread apart.
