The population composition refers to the structure of the population. Different components of population composition are:

Age composition: The number of people in different age groups is called age composition. The population of a country is broadly divided into- children ( $0 - 14$ years), adults ( $15 - 59$ years) and aged ( $60$ years and above).

Sex ratio: Sex ratio is the number of males and females in a population. It is expressed as the number of females per $1000$ males. It has been noticed that male births are more than female births in almost all societies because of biological reasons. The sex ratio is often unfavourable to women in some underdeveloped countries, because of gender discrimination. This is due to high female mortality.

Literacy: It is the ability to read and write. The main features which affect the literacy rate are the levels of economic development, urbanisation, the standard of living, the social status of women, the availability of educational facilities, and government policies.

Occupation: It is the number of people involved in different economic activities.
