The process of interchange of respiratory gases between the atmosphere and alveolar air and between alveolar air and blood in the pulmonary capillaries is called external respiration.

The process of external respiration:
The venous blood that comes from different tissues contain more carbon dioxide and less oxygen. The partial pressure of CO₂ is 46mm Hg and O₂is 40mm Hg. The alveolar air in the lungs contains less CO₂ and more O₂. The partial pressure of CO₂ is 40mm Hg and the partial pressure of O₂ is 100mm Hg.
Due to the pressure difference of CO₂ (46-40 mm Hg), the CO₂ of blood diffuses into the lungs. O₂(100-40mm Hg) diffuses from the lungs alveoli diffuses into the blood.

Internal respiration: The exchange of gases in the body tissues is called internal respiration it occurs between arterial blood and extracellular fluid. It takes place by diffusion and is also called tissue respiration.
Process: In the tissue, O₂ is consumed and CO₂ is produced. The partial pressure of oxygen is 40mm of Hg and CO₂ is 46mm Hg. Due to the difference of pressure difference O₂ pressure (90-40), the O₂ from the blood enters (diffuses) into the tissue cells. Similarly, the difference of CO₂ pressure (46-40) the CO₂ from the tissue cells enters into the blood.
