In the case of regular reflection, a parallel beam of incident light gets reflected as a parallel beam in only one direction. In the case of an irregular reflection, a parallel beam of incident light gets reflected in different directions.

Regular reflection of light takes place from smooth surfaces such as that of a plane mirror or a highly polished metal surface. Irregular reflection takes place from rough surfaces such as tables, walls, paper, cardboard, and unpolished metal objects.

Images are formed by regular reflection of light. Image is never formed due to irregular reflection. This is because light rays falling on rough surfaces are scattered in all directions.

For example. A plane mirror or a highly polished metal surface produces a regular reflection of light and forms images. The diffused reflection causes the spreading of light energy over a large area, hence helping in general illumination. Also, it cuts off the glare of light and does not cause any strain on the eye.
