Make five fine holes A, B, C, D, and E at different points near the edge of the lamina. Hang this lamina on a wall with the help of a nail that passes through hole A.

It will come to rest with the centre of mass vertically below the point
A. Hang this lamina with the help of a nail that passes through hole A. Check the lamina whether is free to rotate in a vertical plane about the nail. To find the vertical line from A, tie a plumbline (a thread and a weight) to the nail. Mark the position of the thread on the lamina (in the figure it is AB). The centre of mass of the lamina lies somewhere on this vertical line. Now hang the lamina by the hole C. Do the same process and the centre of mass lies somewhere on the vertical line CD.
The point of intersection of AB and CD, O, is the centre of mass of the lamina. To make sure it is the centre of mass, try putting another hole and do the same process. The lamina can be balanced from point O. This point is the centre of mass of the irregularly shaped lamina.
