Nitrogen is the main component of proteins that make up plant and animals bodies. The nitrogen cycle is the series of processes by which nitrogen compound is converted into many forms, passing from the atmosphere to the soil to the organism and back into the atmosphere. This process includes nitrogen fixation, nitrification, assimilation, ammonification and denitrification.

Nitrification: Ammonium salt is first converted into nitrites in the soil with the help of Nitrosomonas bacteria. The nitrites are then converted into nitrates by Nitrobacter. These bacteria are called nitrifying bacteria.

Denitrification: It is the process in which the nitrogen compounds converts into nitrate into gaseous nitrogen (N) by Pseudomonas bacteria. This process is the final stage of this cycle and occurs in the absence of oxygen.
