The alimentary canal is a muscular tube, which extends from the opening of the mouth to the opening of an anus. Digestion, absorption, and elimination are three functions of the alimentary canal. Different organs of the alimentary canal are the mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

1. Mouth: The mouth is the opening surrounded by a pair of lips, through which the food is ingested. The digestion process occurs with the help of teeth, tongue, and saliva.

2. Pharynx: It is also known as the throat. It is the part of the alimentary canal that receives food from the mouth.

3. Oesophagus: It is a muscular tube that connects the mouth and stomach. As it is a muscular tube, it can contract or expand to allow the passage of food. Food moves down the oesophagus by peristalsis.

4. Stomach: It is a sac-like or pouch-like organ that stores, mixes, and, digest food with the help of the gastric juice it produces. The gastric juice consists of mucus, enzymes, and hydrochloric acid.

5. Small intestine: It is a long tube about six meters long and is the place where most of the chemical digestion occurs. When the food is present in the small intestine, all the nutrients of the food are absorbed into the bloodstream.

6. Large intestine:

Large Intestine: The small intestine leads into the large intestine which has three parts. The caecum is a small sac-like structure at the point where the small intestine meets the large intestine. It is followed by colon. The last part of the large intestine is the rectum which stores the faecal matter until ejection and opens into the anus where it gets ejected out of the digestive system.
