Ingestion: The process of intake of food is known as ingestion. The process of digestion starts in the mouth.

Digestion: The process where the large food molecules are broken down into smaller, simpler and soluble molecules that can be absorbed into body cells is called digestion.

Absorption: The process where the digested food substances are absorbed into the body cells is called absorption.

Assimilation: The process where some absorbed food substances are converted into new protoplasm or used to provide energy is called assimilation.

Egestion: The process of removal of undigested food materials from the body is called egestion.

The part of the human digestive system, which does not play any role in the digestion of food is the large intestine and oesophagus. Large intestine consists of a colon, rectum, and anal canal. The colon absorbs water and mineral salts from undigested food, and when the rectum contracts, the faeces are expelled out through the anus, this process is called egestion.
