Atomic number (Z) $= 10$ ; Number of protons $= 10 =$ Number of electrons
Mass number $= 20 =$ Number of protons + Number of neutrons.
No of neutrons $= 20 - 10 = 10$ .

As the number of electrons $= 10$ , therefore, electronic configuration $= 2, 8$

The arrangement of electrons in the shells of an atom is known as electronic configuration. The maximum no. of electrons that a shell can accommodate is given by the formula, $2 n^{2}$ , where ' $n$ ' is the number of shells. Now, since $n = 1$ for the first shell, i.e. K shell, using the above formula, the maximum number of electrons which the first shell can hold = $2 \times 1^{2}$ = $2$ . However, the outermost orbit of an electrically neutral atom cannot have more than eight electrons. This is called the octet rule. If the atom has only one shell, as in the case of hydrogen and helium, the outermost (single shell) can have only two electrons, called as duplet rule.
