Musa paradisiaca is is a monocot plant that is cultivated for its fruit. It is a monocarpic plant, it flowers and produces fruit only once in its life cycle. It produces a terminal branched spadix inflorescence. The flowers are protected by large, brightly coloured, boat-shaped bracts called spathes. Flowers are bracteate, sessile, trimerous. Both unisexual and bisexual flowers are formed. These are zygomorphic and epigynous. Sepals and petals are not distinguished, hence, called perianth. Perianth: It consists of 6 tepals 6, arranged in two whorls of 3 each, the three tepals of the outer whorl and the two lateral tepals of the inner whorl are fused by valvate aestivation to form tube-like structure. The posterior tepal is free. Androecium: It consists of 6 stamens, arranged in two whorls of 3 each. Only five stamens are fertile and the inner posterior stamen is either absent or represented by staminode. Anthers are dithecous. Gynoecium: It is tricarpellary, syncarpous, the median carpel anterior, trilocular, ovary inferior, numerous ovules on axile placentation. Style is simple and filiform, stigma trilobed. Septal nectaries are present.
