Amines are basic in nature due to the presence of a lone pair of electrons on a nitrogen atom. It donates lone pair of electrons and acts as a Lewis base. The basic character of amine depends on the availability of lone pair of electrons. Easier the availability of lone pair of electrons, more basic amine. The groups which show plus inductive effect increase the electron density on the nitrogen atom, therefore, the donation of lone pair of electrons becomes easier. As a result, the basic characters increases. Therefore, alkyl amines are more basic than ammonia.
