Malachite green is a green coloured dye formed by treating benzaldehye with N,N-dimethylaniline in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid. The reactants are taken into 1:2 ratio. This is used as a dyestuff and antimicrobial in aquaculture.

The process of making soap by the hydrolysis of fats and oils with alkalies is called saponification. The imparted colour should not be fugitive, i.e., it should never be removed by washing by water, exposure to light or even by rubbing. It should resist the action of dilute acids and dilute alkalies.
