The muscle tissue is responsible for the various movements in an animal. The three main types of muscular tissues found in the human body are:

1) Striated muscle tissue: These muscle fibres show transverse, alternate, dark and light striations (bands) due to which these are called striated muscles. These muscles are attached to the bones attached to bones by the tendons in different parts of the body and hence are also called skeletal muscles and are responsible for all the movements of body parts that are present throughout the body. These muscles are voluntary in function.

2) Non-Striated or Smooth Muscles: These muscles lack striations. Smooth muscles are responsible for the movement in internal organs such as the stomach, intestine, and uterus and are involuntary in function and controlled by the autonomic nervous system. The cell fibre is elongated and spindle-shaped, which are held together by loose connective tissue. It contains a single nucleus.

3) Cardiac muscle tissue: These muscles resemble striated muscles structurally and unstriated muscles functionally. Cardiac muscles are composed of branched fibres. The branches join to form a network. The intracellular spaces are filled with abundant loose connective tissues. These muscles are involuntary in function.
