Aim: To prepare oxygen from hydrogen peroxide.

Materials required: A dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide, manganese dioxide powder, a round bottom flask, a dropping funnel, a delivery tube, a gas jar with a lid, a beehive shelf, a two-holed stopper, and a trough filled with water.

Procedure: Take a small quantity of manganese dioxide in a round bottom flask. Fix a two-holed stopper into the mouth of the flask. Into one of the holes, fit a dropping funnel, and through the other, introduce a delivery tube in the flask. Pass the other end of the delivery tube into a beehive shelf placed in a trough containing water. Add hydrogen peroxide solution drop by drop into the flask with the help of the dropping funnel. Manganese dioxide decomposes hydrogen peroxide and releases oxygen gas, which passes through the delivery tube and bubbles out through the water in the trough. Allow the first few bubbles of gas to escape into the air, since they are mixed with the air that was in the flask before the reaction. Now, invert a gas jar full of water over the beehive shelf.

Observation: You will observe that the level of water is going down in the gas jar as oxygen gas occupies the space above the water. Gradually, the jar is filled with oxygen gas, which completely displaces the water. Cover the gas jar with a greased lid and remove it from the water.

Conclusion: In this way, a number of gas jars can be filled with oxygen gas. This process of collection of oxygen is called downward displacement of water since water is displaced downwards by the gas collecting in the jar.
