Explain metallic crystals and their properties.

Metallic solids are solids composed of metal atoms that are held together by metallic bonds. In metallic solids, the constituent particles are positively charged metal ions (called kernels) immersed in a sea of mobile electrons. These metal ions occupy the lattice points. The electrons in metallic crystals are mobile and are evenly spread out throughout the crystal. Each metal atom contributes one or more electrons towards this sea of mobile electrons.

The free mobile electrons are responsible for high electrical and thermal conduction in the metals. When an electric field is applied to the metallic substance, these electrons flow through the network of positive ions. Similarly, the thermal energy is also uniformly spread throughout the crystal by free electrons, when metals are heated. Metals have metallic lustre due to these free electrons on the surface. They are malleable and ductile, so that, they can be beaten in to sheets and drawn into wires.
