Explain population growth.

The growth of population can be best defined as the changes occurring in the number of persons living in a particular area between two points of time. Its rate is expressed in percentage. Population growth curves are the graphical representation of the growth of a population from its beginning till it stabilizes. It is made by plotting the number of individuals of species against the time factor. It is of two types: S-shaped and J- shaped growth curve.

(A) S-shaped growth curve: it comprises five phases that are lag phase, positive acceleration phase, exponential phase, negative acceleration phase, and stationary phase. It is shown by most of the organisms including man.

(B) J-shaped growth curve: it comprises of only two phases that include the lag phase and the exponential phase. it is shown by fewer organisms, including rein-deer, algal blooms, annual plants.
