Maize is an example of a monocot root that can be used to refer the anatomical study. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the root with many unicellular hairs. Below the epidermis, a multilayered parenchymatous tissue with inter-cellular spaces is present. It is called the cortex.

The innermost layer of the cortex is the endodermis. They are barrel-shaped cells. Next to endodermis, towards the inner side, pericycle is present that is single layered and parenchymatous. It produces lateral roots.

The vascular bundles are polyarch, radial and exarch.
Phloem parenchyma is absent. The pith is large and made up of loosely arranged parenchymatous cells with abundant starch grains. Secondary growth is absent in the monocot roots.
