Explain the components of an electric bulb with the help of a diagram.

An electric bulb is the most common electrical appliance used for lighting. It has the following components :

1) Glass bulb: All the major components of the bulb are housed in a bulb-shaped glass structure. It protects the inner components such as the fuse, filament, etc.

2) Filament: A tungsten filament is the most important part of a bulb. When a high current passed through the filament it gets heated and starts glowing.

3) Thick wires: These two wires are used as conductors within the bulb. One of these thick wires is connected to the metal case at the base of the bulb. The other thick wire is connected to the metal tip at the canter of the base.

4) Inert gas: The bulb inner is filled with an inert gas such as neon or argon, which slows down the evaporation of the filament.

5) The metal casing:

It has two terminals, one at the centre and the other, the casing itself. The metal tip at the centre of the base and the metal casing at its lower end act as terminals of the bulb. These two terminals of the bulb are fixed in such a way that they do not touch each other. This connects the bulb with the electric wires.
