Coniferous Forests lie in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, between $50$ ° N to $70$ ° N.

Coniferous forests also occur in areas of high altitude in mountainous slopes. Such areas are characterised by short warm summers and severely cold winters.

The trees are tall and straight. They are widely spaced and occur in pure stands. The trees have softwood which is lightweight. These characteristics have made lumbering easy and lucrative (profitable) in the regions of coniferous forests.

The dominant trees of these areas are chir, pine, fir, spruce, cedar, larch, hemlock.

Rich coniferous forests are found in southern Alaska, southern Canada, parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland and Russia.

Fur-bearing animals like silver fox, mink, lynx, polar bear, caribou and reindeer are found in these areas.

The softwood of the coniferous forests is used for making paper pulp for manufacturing paper and newsprint. It is also used for making matchboxes, packing boxes, plywood for furniture and doors, sports goods, etc. This has resulted in large scale lumbering and destruction of these forests by the advanced countries in which these forest areas are located.
