The hybridisation involved in phosphorous pentachloride molecule: The electronic configuration of phosphorous is $1 s^{2} 2 s^{2} 2 p^{6} 3 s^{2} 3 p^{3}$ . The five valence of phosphorous atom is accounted by the excitation of one of the $3 s$ -electrons to one of the vacant $3 d$ -orbitals. The valence electronic configuration of phosphorous atom in its excited state is as given below:

Thus, the five orbitals (i.e., one $s$ , three $p$ and one $d$ -orbitals) undergo hybridisation and give a set of five ${sp}^{3} d$ -hybrid orbitals which are directed towards the five corners of a trigonal bipyramidal.

In ${PCl}_{5}$ , the five ${sp}^{3} d$ -orbitals of phosphorus overlap with the singly occupied $p$ -orbitals of chlorine atoms to form five $P - Cl$ $σ$ -bonds out of which three $P - Cl$ bonds lie in one plane at an angle of $120^{°}$ with each other and are termed as equatorial bond. The remaining two $P - Cl$ bonds, one lie above and the other lie below the equatorial plane, making an angle of $90^{°}$ with the plane. These bonds are called axial bonds.
