Land use pattern of India: A large part of the total area in India is used for agriculture. There are two types of agricultural lands in India- Net Sown Area and Fallow land. Net Sown Area refers to an area that is under cultivation in a particular year while Fallow land is an area presently not under cultivation. Net Sown Area is about $43 %$ and Fallow land is about $11 %$ of the total area in India. Therefore, agricultural land comprises more than half of the total land use. Moreover, about $4 %$ of the total area is a cultivable wasteland. This land can be used for growing crops in the future. Apart from agriculture, land in India is utilised for forests, pasture, grazing and non-agricultural use. Roads, housing, buildings, industries etc., are examples of land for Non-Agricultural Use. About $6 %$ of India is barren and wasteland.

Impact of the decrease of land under permanent pastures: A reduction in land under permanent pastures would negatively affect cattle, sheep, and other animals which are reared for milk, wool and skin and consequently pastoralists.
