The reproductive phase of females starts at about 10-13 years of age and continues until 45-50 years of age. During this period every 28-30 days, one of the two ovaries releases an egg. This is known as ovulation. Over a period of days before and after ovulation, the walls of the uterus develop a thick lining that is rich in blood vessels in preparation for possible pregnancy.

If the egg is not fertilized, thickened lining of the uterus along with its blood vessels are shed. This causes bleeding for 4 to 6 days. This is known as menstruation or period.

The regular monthly cycle of egg maturation and release, along with changes in the uterus wall, is known as the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle is controlled by hormones.
